Psalm 121 is a part of a series of Psalms called the Songs of Ascents. These Psalms were sung by Jewish believers for centuries as they traveled up the hills to Jerusalem to worship. Jerusalem was higher than all the surrounding area. No matter what direction a person came from, he went "up to Jerusalem."

How Did Jesus Manifest That He is God?

More than thirty manifestations of Jesus are recorded in the Bible. They serve as little windows through which we peer into the power and might and glory of the Child born in human flesh in Bethlehem. The miracles of Jesus demonstrate that he is God with power over nature, over illness, over death. Changing water into wine at Cana was the first among many demonstrations that Jesus is God. After the amazing wine making incident, St. John writes, "This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him" (John 1:11).

When Martin Luther posted his Theses against the sale of indulgences on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg in 1517, it was like throwing 95 lit matches into a huge tinder box. The whole church was groaning under the burden of the theological and moral corruption that had been growing and spreading for several generations. Luther's call for reform, and for a renewed and purified proclamation of God's grace to sinners, was very quickly embraced by many high-minded clergy and laity throughout western Europe.

It is hard to imagine a more extraordinary collection of people to whom to preach. This is not a Midwest congregation blessed with lifelong members, countless confirmation classes, young couples, and children who know that Jesus loves them.

Feeding Jesus' Lambs in Ukraine

In December 2003 I read an article (much like this one) in the Lutheran Sentinel. It described an opportunity to spend three weeks in Ukraine teaching Vacation Bible School for the Ukrainian Lutheran Church under the auspices of Thoughts of Faith. I was intrigued and, in short order, I was hooked.

Q: So often we hear the phrase "the devil, the world, and our own sinful flesh" when referring to the sources of evil and trouble in our lives. Can the devil really affect us so directly, or is it just a matter of the devil using things in the world, and also our own willingness, to tempt us to sin?

God The Father

We have fathers and mothers who take care of us at home. They give us food and clothing and a house to live in. They keep us safe from harm. They teach us what is true. They teach us what is right. We trust in our fathers and mothers to take good care of us.
