The Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) is launching a major
effort in Christian school development, currently referred to as
the Lutheran Schools Initiative (LSI). The purpose of this effort
is so to reshape our approach to Christian schools that we break
through the roadblocks that have kept schools in the ELS
generally few and small.

2005 marks the 475th anniversary of the reading of the
Augsburg Confession. Since this is the chief confession of
the Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Sentinel presents
articles which show the history of this confession and examines a
few of the individual articles. This year, reading the
Augsburg Confession would be an especially worthwhile
endeavor.

For I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at
last on the earth; and after my skin is destroyed, this I know,
that in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself,
and my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns
within me! (Job 19:25-27)

Geographically, the horrible disaster in Asia is far from us
here in the Czech Republic. And, yet, in another way, it is very
close to us in the Plzen congregation. There is an Indian student
who regularly attends our services, Diana Punraj. She is studying
medicine at the University in Plzen. Diana was confirmed in our
church two years ago.

The whole world watched as two people-in different countries
and circumstances-slowly died. One held our attention because she
was starved to death through a court order, the other because he
was the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Amid the joy of
celebrating Christ's resurrection, these two deaths caused
different reactions on the part of many people.
