LUTHERAN SCHOOLS of AMERICA UPDATE: The progress of Lutheran
Schools of America (LSA) and its impact upon Christian education within the
Evangelical Lutheran Synod is dramatic. Congregational leaders and their pastors
have recognized the vital importance of the mission of LSA; namely, to advance
excellence and outreach in Lutheran education. The Board for LSA continues to
urge the prayers and gifts of the members of the ELS in support of excellence and
outreach in Lutheran Education. Thank you for support and gifts. The members

KNOW YOUR SYNOD:  Visit the Ottesen Museum during the Synod
Convention - Why have a Museum? Because it is one of the most effective
ways to tell a story. It’s like having a “show and tell” program with school
children. What will you see if you come down Browns Court on the Bethany
College Campus? You will see a fine looking building with the name “The
Ottessen Museum.” Where did it get such a name? One of our forefathers
who helped organize the Synod back in 1853 was a pastor from Norway by
the name of Jakob Aal Ottesen. When he died his daughter Hannah inherited
his household goods and around 1931 she gave them to the Synod. That is
why the Synod named the Museum after him. When you come in you will see
large pictures of our three most notable forefathers, U.V. Koren, H.A. Preus,
and J.A. Ottesen. There is the “preste krave” or pastors collar worn by clergy-
man in those days. Fantastic wood carvings are on display. Especially inter-
esting is the old muzzle loading rifle that Ottesen brought with him from
Norway. You will also see a display of the early days of Bethany Lutheran
College and Seminary, with pictures of every student who has graduated from
our Seminary. Do you want to see what your pastor looked like in his early
years? Come and see! (That is, if he is a graduate of Bethany Seminary).
There are artifacts from our mission fields-South America, South Korea,
India, and Eastern Europe. There are examples of the clothing worn by the
early settlers. There is an altar painting and baptismal font from one of our
early churches. On the lower level is a replica of a log cabin with many
furnishings from the pioneer days. Yes, there is so much to see that you must
come for a visit. We will gladly give you a tour and explain the significance
of each of the items. Why not gather up a few members and take a “museum
trip.” A good time to come would be during the synod convention in June. We
will even invite you to sit down for “a cup of coffee and a kringla.”

YOUR OFFERING DOLLARS AT WORK:
In the month of February a
total of $ 11,000 was expended by the Board for Christian Service in responding to the needy situations: assisting tornado damaged communities in the
Arkansas region (via WELS Committee on Relief) and providing help for a
couple of families in our synod (MI and WA)who recently experienced
tragedies.

TREASURER’S UPDATE:
Through the month of February the members of
the ELS gave $ 95,228 to the Lord’s work. This is $ 29,722 short of the
projected monthly 2008 budget.

“This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s
people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God” ( 2
Corinthians 9:12).
